Finding Balance When There Is So Much To Do!

I am a baker.

By evening. However, by day I am still a full time account manager. And a mommy. And a wife. And a friend. And… Well you get the picture.

It sounds weird to call myself a baker, I mean a few months ago I didn’t even think I could come up with this phantom side hustle, now I’m *so* passionate about it, it’s amazing.

I suppose what surprised me the most is the ease of it all. When I get an order I am brainstorming what the final presentation will be. I know it will taste good but the look is what interests me the most.

My main goal is…how can I make it pretty?

Being an entrepreneur has been fun so far, we have steady orders coming in every week and we are stashing all incoming funds away.

However, now that I see where this can go, I have so many ideas and plans for the business…the thing about a side hustle is that you have to dedicate all of your non work time to it.

How do I do that?

I mean, I don’t need to tell you how busy I am, we are all super busy in life, I guess I’m trying to find a balance between pursuing my dreams while working full time.

Would I want to work in a bake shop full time? No. I would *love* to open several shops around Brooklyn and hire qualified folks to execute my dream.

The hard part about the said pursuit of happiness is that sometimes it seems as if there is not enough time in the day.

I have three things (non family related) that occupy my mind daily:

  • My day job (advancement, certifications)
  • My cupcake business (growth, expansion)
  • My blog (growth, expansion, building community)

I feel as if I am being pulled in three directions. Take this week for example: I baked 8 dozen cupcakes between Sunday and Wednesday…it was a very hectic work week as we had a new product launch, as a result I haven’t done the work I wanted to on the blog.

Balance, you are an elusive *@&^ sometimes!

While I look for this elusive balance, I will be blogging through it all, and when I find it you will all know about it! ha.

Any tips for finding balance when you are pulled in so many different directions?

  1. This is great. I wanted to do something similar myself. I have the skills but I just have a problem marketing myself. I may look into it more in the up coming months since I have a lot of time on my hands. Balance is important and it's great if you have support as well. Your cupcakes looks amazing. I wish I had a chocolate one right now!

Hi! Oh you had me at cupcake! I love cupcakes ! Yes balance can be tough but I believe you can do it. Following you on PInterest. (I have an entire board dedicated to cupcakes) Stopping in from SITS!

  3. Wow – girl your cupcakes have me drooling. Funny, I have a little side hustle idea (it's just a twinkle right now) that is very similar to yours! I applaud you for taking on so much, the days are too short to get everything done and boy do I know how you feel. It seems like once the little lady and I get home from work/school it's time to go to bed! I think organization and passion is the key – when you are passionate about something, it finds a way to be in your life some way, some how. Please keep us posted on your progress!

  4. For me, finding balance when I'm going crazy usually means I'm trying to do too much. I need to let something go. Maybe it's something small that I'm not even realizing is taking up precious time, like a facebook game. Just finding a little down time helps my mental health.

Good luck. Your cupcakes look amazing! Stopping by from SITS.

Balance is usually hard to find while trying to do everything that want. All I can say is pace yourself, and try not to burn yourself out. If it's something like Miss Robin said about cutting out one thing (like FB game) then that would free you up. At the end of the day, mental health is what's important.

    Your cupcakes look wonderful!

You are such an inspiration to me. It is so great to see you following your passion. Those cupcakes look yummy!!1

  8. I have NO tips, which is why I usually don't allow my plate to get too full. There are some people that are made to handle it and thrive from it. I think with time, I'll get to your level. My only tiny tip that I do to keep organized and on task is by writing everything down and checking things off when I finish them….along with putting them in my phone calendar with an alarm.

Now…..those cupcakes?!? Can I put in an order from Texas? (I wish I was kidding, but I'm so serious.) Those cupcakes look so amazingly delicious!!!! You need to get on Cupcake Wars. :-) This is an inspiration and is further inspiring me to find my and work hard on my dream.

  10. You DO have the skills, I have seen your recipes and tweets about your stuff!!I think you should start with friends and family (who I am sure love your baking skills as it is) and your treats will sell themselves!!

  11. Thanks so much for stopping by! I am following back on Pinterest!

  12. You should do it! and I totally understand, by the time I get home, its 10 o'clock before you know it!! I agree organization is so key to being successful. Thanks so much for your comment!

  13. That is very true, I've stopped playing games on the train and I've started writing blogs instead. This is such a great tip, thanks!

  14. Thank you! you are so right mental health is the key to keeping it all together.

  15. thanks so much!

  16. Thanks Journee! Miss you!!

  17. :) When I come to TX I will drop by and make you some!! :) I would love to go on cupcake wars, I need to get more complicated with my choices and flavors…soon maybe?!

  18. Thanks! Delegation is everything. Just being organized to a T is super important!

  19. Go you girlie! My only advice would be to plan your time accordingly and stick with the plan. If you set aside 1 hr to work on the blog, then actually use that 1 hr they way you intended. If you are a planner type of girl, like myself, then this should be easy!

LOVE the cupcakes! Now I know who to go to if I have an event and need some sweet treats!

  22. I love that term “side hustle” – and that’s exactly it! I think we all have something going on on the side and it is so hard to juggle everything. I think it helps to find your passion and then it makes it all seem a little easier. The cupcakes look awesome btw. Visiting from SITS – congrats on your day!

  23. We put so much on our plate don’t we? I would have to say that establishing goals and priorities are the first step. Then before you take on a task, see where it fits in to the mix. It is ok to say no to things. Happy SITS Day – love the cupcakes!

This post makes me feel a lot better about myself because I need near-constant reminding that I AM NOT ALONE when it comes to feeling overwhelmed. I just journaled about this last night: as long as I am taking care of all the things on my “need to do” list, then I am just going to have accept that my “want to do” list may not get all of the attention that I would prefer because I must prioritize.

  34. Those cupcakes are real lookers – and it sounds like you already know how to balance! Get in some serious relaxation time (days off, nights off, vacations) as often as you can – that tends to help with overall productivity and perspective.

I’m so glad that you mentioned the blog is also a “job”. I love my blog but feel the same way – I have a demanding full time job and feel like my blog, if it’s going to go anywhere anytime soon should be another (almost) full time job! Ah! Balance may be overrated…Happy SITS Day!
