Fitbloggin 14: Savannah Recap Part 1

Like Fitbloggin 12, and Fitbloggin 13 I will be recapping the best conference in the world in 3 separate posts! There is just so much good stuff to share!

my fly down tee ad personal mantra!

my fly down tee and personal mantra!

Unlike last year, we had completely smooth sailing  with our flight and travel. Kim and I flew together and we waited not so patiently for the third tip of our A Healthy U Conference trifecta, Cassandre. The first thing we decided to do was drop our bags and explore Savannah for some eats!

The Lady And Sons

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t struggle with the decision to dine at the restaurant of a mogul who said some pretty vile things back in the day. At the end of day, when would I ever be in Savannah again? I had to see what this tourist trap famous restaurant was about.

As we sat we were served with a biscuit and a cornbread pancake. It was a delicious biscuit, but to put some context into things, I hadn’t eaten in 7 hours so, a piece of paper might have been just as scrumptious. The cornbread pancake was good too but I felt myself getting insanely full very quickly and I wanted to eat my entree so I left half the pancake alone.

I chose the Philly cheesesteak with jelly fries for the entree. It was good but heavy. I could get through one jelly fry and half of my sandwich.

After that we headed back to regroup and get ready for the mixer/ice breaker party for all the attendees. There were lots of hugs and laughs and happy in that room. The Fitbloggin tribe is a special one. I feel like I am seeing all of my family all at once.

Later on that night was the ghost tour and since most of us wanted no parts, we took a quick walk over to Wet Willies for something small because my tummy was still recovering from Ms. Deen. Lia, Allie, Kim, Cassandre and I went to grab drinks. (I had a non alcoholic daiquiri appropriately called the “weak willie“) we had a lot of girl giggles and ate a bit too. I ended up with three tacos that resembled the tacos I make at home…cept a lot greasier.

Day 2:

We woke up nice and early for breakfast then we went to the anti computer body workout with fitness guru Ashley Borden. It was great, it was full of moves that opened you up in all kinds of ways! I was dressed in my full Eleven By Venus Gear from head to toe.

More blog friends started arriving! I was simply overjoyed to finally meet Keya and Hope, both forever blog friends that have yet to meet in person! I also got reconnect with my blogging sister from another mister the lovely ms. Joi!

Next we headed over to Valerie‘s session on How To Build Community Wellness Programs where we got a ton of great tips for next year’s conference and beyond. Here are some of the great tips:

  • Plan way in advance for big events
  • recruit volunteers (you can’t do it all by yourself on event day!)
  • If you are planning to throw a 5k (hello bucketlist!) timing can be very expensive
  • use your local libraries to get the word out about your event
  • Use local resources such as Whole Foods, Running Shops and others for sponsorships

After that we headed to my boy Andre (aka mission meltdown) session on shooting video with your smart phone. I learned so much about shadows, lighting, mics… Let’s just say there will be some cash spent on Amazon this weekend… Like a lot.  Expect more videos folks! For an inkling of what I am purchasing click here for a full list! I am so inspired.

photo3 (3)And that is the end of Part one of the Recap, stay tuned for part 2 which includes me crying like a baby, run Disney, my first official rap shoutout, more crying, and clubbing in Savannah.

Would you visit Paula Deen’s restaurant? Have you ever been to a Wet Willies? Are you as excited as I am for more video on the blog??

  3. I’m always excited for more video! You do such a wonderful job.

I’d have to say no to the Paula Deen restaurant. I really just don’t like that type of food and she doesn’t have the personality to make me overcome my distaste for it even once.

We had a Wet Willies here once. But it was a water slide. Not the same thing. :)

  4. Awesome recap. Lets go back! Yes more videos!

  5. I have been to Paula Deen’s restaurant and I met her and her sons and the rest of her family while I was on an incentive trip. The meal and cooking class we took was outstanding. I have a bunch of fun pictures. They were nothing but gracious when I was there, so I was surprised to hear some of the things she had said. And I have also been to Wet Willies! Those two things were a couple of the biggest highlights of our trip to Savannah…the other one being meeting someone who turned out to be one of the greatest friends I could ever ask for, and who I am still in touch with today, years after I left the company we both were with, and in spite of the back that we live far away from each other.

    • aw I love that you made that connection in Savannah, sometimes you never know where you are going to find your next best friend!!

  6. What…?? Joi? Sigh. Tell her I miss her.
I wonder if I’d like Paula Deen’s. Probably! I do love butter and more butter. I can’t wait to hear more about your trip! It’s so much fun seeing your recaps and Allie’s.

    • I will! I kept telling her how much we all missed her, she is adjusting to a new work schedule but she says she will be back soon! woot!

  8. So interested in Paul Deen’s restaurant since it’s been on my list pre-controversy. My cousin’s husband is a chef and they used to live in ATL and raved about that spot. So overall is it worth going there? And you have to explain: what is a jelly fry? You have me so curious! (I think this comment is fueled by the fact that I’m typing this before eating my late lunch LOL!).

    • apparently they are circles of potatoes…deep fried and battered! I don’t know. It could just be me, the girls enjoyed the food thoroughly. The place was overrun with people, we waited long…(with a reservation!) there has got to be something in that.

  9. I have wanted to go to Paula and still will make a trip there just to see but if the food is heavy I may just get an appetizer or something because I will waste money buying something that I won’t eat. I love Savannah as a whole though and glad you got down here for some southern hospitality.

  10. I love that first photo! So pretty! Also, what is a jelly fry?

Did you teach Zumba again this year? That was one of my favorite parts of last year’s conference! Loved it!

  11. Love part 1 of your recap!!!
I have always loved Paula Deen and I think that her statement (while completely inappropriate) was totally blown out of proportion. I would visit her restaurant – not sure if I would eat there – seems like a lot of heavy food!!!

  12. Jelly fries???? Man, that sounds like my arteries would start crying! LOL But I’ve always wanted to eat there too.

  13. I can’t imagine how heavy the food would be at Paula Deen’s restaurant. Sounds like you’re doing great at recognizing your limits, too. How is Joi? I’ve missed her! Definitely looking forward to seeing your new videos. Hopefully you’ll share some of the tips you learned!
