I waited outside on a line for 8 hours straight in the middle of Times Square. Why on earth would I do that? Glad you asked.
This is my story. *cue law and order chime*
One of the girls in my very fabulous NYC MOMMY Blogger network shared with me an event that Samsung was throwing called “Ditch The DSLR” and the first 250 attendees to trade in their traditional DSLR would be given a brand new NX30 which is a mirrorless camera worth almost $1000.
I wasn’t convinced that this camera was worth me giving up Lola (my pet name for my camera) so I reached out to my girl and photography mentor/shero LaShawn from Everyday Eyecandy. She responded quickly (a quality that is so good to have btw) and let me know that the camera was an excellent choice and I’d have a better range of options with the NX300. Just like that I made up my mind. I was going to get that camera.
Days leading up
Now I had an entire week to mull over this and with each day the want for the new camera grew but so did the anxiety. How long would I have to wait? This is NYC–would I even have a chance? Do I really want to part with Lola?!
The day before the event I had been stalking the #ditchthedslr hash tag and I realized that folks would be lining up from the night before. By the time I fell asleep at 11pm that night, people had already tweeted pictures of 60-70 people comfortably camped out in Times Square. I almost talked myself out of it, but then I realized that it simply didn’t hurt to try. My game plan would be to show up in Times Square insanely early but bring gym clothes too. That way if I couldn’t get on the line, I could get my workout in. Win/win right?
I popped up at 4:30am. Exactly 40 minutes earlier than my alarm clock. I rolled into the shower, into my clothes and onto the train. I was a bunch of nerves on the train too, I didn’t do anything but count stops and twiddle fingers. Was I going to get the camera? Did I just wake up at 4 am for… nothing?
When I got off the train I made a mad dash for the line. When I arrived I was stunned and extremely relieved to see about 100 people waiting. Thank you Lord! I was in the running to get a new camera. Except now, I had a 8 hour wait ahead of me. FUN. About 3 hours in, some Samsung employees came to check each and every camera waiting on line for a functioning/unbroken lens, battery, and camera body. When they arrived my number was officially 127!
Even though I had all of my gadgets with me, waiting 8 hours outside in the middle of times square is pretty miserable. I didn’t have a beach chair like most so I slummed it by sitting on the bare concrete. My hubby was sweet enough to bring me breakfast but I didn’t drink a drop until I had 3 hours left. I so didn’t trust my bladder! The weather was amazingly perfect so not one complaint about that. I entertained myself by catching up on The Mindy Show and playing Monopoly on my tablet.
Finally they called me. 8 hours later. Feet killing me, hungry, and tired. But when I got that new baby in my hands I knew it was worth it.
Meet Sasha. Last name: Fierce.
I will miss Lola. She brought me so much joy. I will remember her always. It was time to move on, and it probably never would have happened (budgetwise/comfort) without this event.
Do you name your favorite inanimate objects? What would you wait on an 8 hour line in the middle of Times Square for??
