Philly’s 3rd Annual Be Well Bootcamp

Last weekend I went to the land of brotherly love, otherwise known as Philadelphia for the 3rd annual Be Well Bootcamp! Myself as well as my A Healthy U Conference planning partners in crime headed to beautiful Philly for just a few hours, a girls day trip to have some amazing health and wellness fun.

This event was HUGE. It was held on the Drexel University Campus at their Recreation Center. There would be all day Fitness classes, seminars, sponsors, cooking demonstrations and more.

When we got to the Be Well Boot camp we registered easily and quickly, given a swag bag and proceeded to have some breakfast. The had a small container of overnight oats and a Chia seed granola bar. Both were quite satisfying even though they were small.be well bootcamp

Prior to the day, we were entered in lotteries for small group classes. Unfortunately I was not picked for Bodypump (y’all know how much I love my bodypump) so we kinda stalked around the outside of the class hoping to get a spot. Persistence pays off because we got the last 3 spots. :)

The class was not easy. What I liked about it though was that there were tracks I had never heard before… My current Bodypump class has been on the same track list for the past 3 months! It was a breath of fresh air. I loved the instructor too she was a little fireball and I was able to get a picture with her. Yes, you just got free tickets to the gun show.

Next we headed over to the sponsor area that had lots of great things happening like blood pressure screenings, raw/healthy juice samples, and food!

We also got to do a little Flywheel challenge side by side. We had one minute to go ALL out and the person with the highest score wins. Needless to say I was extremely a bit winded once it ended! It was crazy fun though!

Before you knew it, it was time for the next workout! The girls wanted to do Zumba but even though I am a #zumbasnob I decided to give it a try. Well–after one song I left. The girl was good, just not my style. After that we went to go to a session on focusing and being mindful in the present moment and stop worrying about the past and the future. Here are some great things I learned from that session:

  • We spend a lot of our time wondering and worrying about the past and the future
  • The only thing we have control of is the present moment
  • Do daily exercises to keep you in the moment
  • There is a big difference between what the brain thinks and mindful thoughts
  • You must begin to master the ability not to be reactive but be responsive to what you’re thinking about
  • We tend to have dead end thoughts,  being mindful creates a U-turn for those thoughts
  • Practicing mindfulness is like creating a muscle, with practice like any other muscle, it become stronger

Next we headed to the dance class that we had won the lottery for. It was so much fun! We did choreo from Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and more! The moves were great, the energy was high and I even won a really cute tee for “going hard” thanks to the girls who nominated me!

After that the line was really long for lunch so we decided to spend some quality time together and have a decent sit down lunch–we deserved it! We probably burned close to 1k calories between all the workouts we did!

Lunch was so good. Then we packed up and caught an earlier bus back home. The Philadelphia Be Well Boot camp was a major success and we really had a great time. Can’t wait until next year!

  3. Now I know I’m not crazy…I thought I saw you at Be Well Philly last Saturday at the Mindfulness seminar! Good move on getting into Body Pump, I didn’t get into any of the lotteries. It really was a great time.

  6. Sounds like a super fun day – lots of great workouts!!!
We spent 3 weeks in NJ one summer and we were just about 30 minutes from Philadelphia. The boys and I (they were 4 & 6 at the time) took several day trips to Philly to do different things – lots of fun!!

  7. I’ve been to Philly when I was younger. Nellie, the food does look like it was really awesome! Oh my goodness! Your notes about that class made me want to cry. There are some things that are currently happening that I’ve been thinking about past and future about and yet, I know what you are saying is soooo right! I need to focus on the present. Thanks so much for that!

    • You are welcome Britt! The class made me very emotional as well. You don’t realize how much you are focusing on the past and future until someone points it out to you!

  8. I haven’t been to Philly in ages but I used to go quite a bit.
The food looks so good! The conference I went to had decent food but not until lunch and dinner of the second day. Decent food is important! It gives you that energy!

    • Yes definitely! The food pictured wasn’t the food that they gave us, we were naughty and wen’t offsite for lunch! But I totally agree conference food can totally make or break your energy levels!

  9. I’ve been to Philly once…I spent a beautiful day in August holed up in a cold conference room sorting through boxes of documents for a client. Yuck!

This event looks like so much fun! I saw your insta photos and it just looked like a blast. The food looks amazing too! You know how much I love both Flywheel and Bodypump!! I would have stalked that class too! I’m still doing it at home although with modifications and slightly less weight.

If you know this, please forgive me….with the Les Mills classes they change the choreo every three months so you get new tracks and new choreography. I used to teach bodyjam and I would try to incorporate old choreo and music in with the recent release to change things up. You could always ask your instructor to do the same!

    • Yes! Thank you so much for explaining…I asked her after the 8th week in a row, she is a stickler about sticking with the program. She doesn’t switch anything up at all! I am hoping for a change soon!

  10. Looks like you had a fabulous time. The workouts looked tough, but the food looked amazing! A great reward for such hard work. I love the mindful lessons learned, they are so helpful especially for those tough/feeling down kind of days. Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you guys had an awesome time!
I love the ideas about staying in the moment. I really have to try that.

    • Thank you! I have been practicing this a lot lately, its really insane how much time I have been spending worrying about the past/future. I just need to do what I need to do now to avoid all of that worrying!

  12. Dang. I live 25 minutes from Philly. Only 25 minutes away!!!
(and ya, I scrolled back up for another look at those sweet potato fries)
