FAQs

Can I use frozen berries? Absolutely! Frozen berries work just as well as fresh ones in this recipe. No need to thaw; just dump them in and go. The dessert might need a tad longer in the oven, though.

What if I don’t have French vanilla cake mix? No worries! Any white or yellow cake mix can step in as a substitute. The French vanilla mix does add a nice flavor, but it’s all good either way.

How can I get my kids involved? Kids can totally help with layering the berries, sprinkling the cake mix, and dotting the butter on top. It’s a fun, mess-friendly recipe that’s perfect for little hands eager to help in the kitchen.

Where to Serve

This berry dump cake is a hit at BBQs, family dinners, potlucks, or any occasion that calls for a sweet finish. It’s casual yet impressive, making it perfect for summer gatherings or cozy winter get-togethers.

Leftovers? Cover the dish with foil or transfer slices to an airtight container. Keep it in the fridge, and enjoy chilled cake for up to 3 days. The flavors actually meld beautifully overnight.

Tips for Making This Recipe with Kids

  • Berry Fun: Let them wash and dry the berries. It’s a great sensory activity, plus they get to snack on a few.
  • Layer Up: Kids love the dumping part. Have them layer the berries and sprinkle the sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Why This Recipe Works

The Berry Dump Cake recipe is a winner for several reasons. First off, it’s incredibly easy. No mixing, no measuring batter ingredients, just layering and baking. It’s so simple, it feels like cheating.

Then there’s the taste. The tartness of the berries with the sweet cake mix and the richness of the butter create a perfect harmony of flavors. The vanilla and cinnamon add that little extra oomph, making it taste like you put way more effort into it.

And let’s not forget the texture. The berries turn juicy and soft, while the cake mix turns golden and crispy on top, especially those buttery bits. Every bite is a perfect combo of fruity and cakey goodness.

The best part about dump cakes is that you can really make some fun recipes with a variety of ingredients. You can switch the vanilla cake mix for chocolate cake mix, you can make a blueberry dump cake, a caramel apple dump cake is always fun, I’ve even seen a cherry dump cake recipe.

Some recipes call for chocolate chips, brown sugar, pudding mix, canned fruit, toffee chips, or even peanut butter chips. We won’t be using any of these things is this quick dessert, you will absolutely love this delicious cake! It’s a classic dessert that doesn’t take much time.

I am a big fan of apple pie filling so that is always a good option too. This simple recipe adds a box of cake mix (usually white cake mix) and fruit — add a scoop of ice cream and you have the perfect dessert.

This is definitely one of my favorite fall recipes but I love to enjoy different variations depending on the handful of ingredients that I have available. A scoop of vanilla ice cream really takes this great recipe over the top!

Instead of blueberry pie filling we will be using fresh blueberries for this recipe. If this is the first dump cake you are making you will fall in love with this classic recipe because it’s truly one of the easiest dessert.

You can keep the leftovers from this awesome dessert recipe by covering it in plastic wrap and sticking the casserole dish in the fridge.
