Giving My Kids The Summer They Won’t Forget

photo4

I had several epiphanies during the monster snowstorms of 2013/2014.

Apart from grunting and cursing this crazy weather, I realized a couple of things.

a. I really don’t like snow more than a dusting.

b. I need to be better about exposing my kids to this amazing city.

As a result, I have decided to stop teaching Zumba for the entire summer. As a matter of fact I will stop teaching memorial day weekend and return in late September.

I will miss Zumba SO MUCH but I know this is absolutely the right decision for me and the family. Remember since this is a volunteer position, I wouldn’t be losing any cash but what I am losing is seeing my amazing, dedicated women every single Saturday. I will miss choreographing new songs every week (although I won’t be surprised if I started the new class with a completely different new set of songs) and I will miss the satisfaction of teaching such a great class.

The one thing that being locked in the house with zero degree weather and mounds and mounds of snow taught me is that I really didn’t take advantage of the warm weather last year. I was happy with some comfortable air conditioning and cooking on the grill every night. This year things will change, things MUST change.

My city, like every urban city is filled to the brim with things to do with children every weekend. Since I will be traveling twice this summer for BlogHer & Fitbloggin’ I am determined to spend the remaining weekends entertaining the children as best as I can even if its just a Saturday in the park.

This is a conscious decision to put family first, since I am a full time working mom I don’t get to spend the amount of time that I want with the kids–and now that they are older (2 & 5) and kinda easier to manage, I really want to spend the summer hot days entertaining them and hopefully making it a summer that they won’t forget.

This was a tough decision but it feels so right. With the big guy going off to kindergarten this Fall, I am challenging myself to really take a bite out of the big apple and enjoy all the amazing deals! We have been to a few museums but I want to hit them ALL this summer, kiddie pools, Coney Island, aquariums, botanic gardens, zoos, festivals, parks–the possibilities are endless and I need ALL of my weekend to enjoy every minute of these boys. Not mention we will end our amazing summer with a trip to Universal Studios with a bunch of blogger friends and their kids!!

So, Adios Zumba, I will see you in the fall.

p.s. for those folks coming to A Healthy U Conference tomorrow, I will be teaching and it will be quite the SHOW! :)

Have you sacrificed something you love to make someone you love happy?

  1. Good for you Nellie! Zumba classes will always be there but your kids will only be little once. Having two teenagers, I wish I took more time to do stuff with them when they were your kids’ ages.

  2. That is so great! You MUST take full advantage of that city – for all of us who live in the country :-) I’m also giving up one of my three classes this summer. It’s at 6pm and just too late when there’s so many adventures to be had with the kids.
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow!!!

    • I know–I totally feel like I have been slacking with all the amazing stuff that’s available! Maybe by the end of it I can write a guide :)

  3. First off, good luck tomorrow and please know I will be there in spirit and can’t wait to hear how it all went here (hope you will share). Second, I am so with you and definitely making sure my weekends at the very least are free to enjoy the nice, warm summer weather. And yes I loathe and despise snow so much, too. We definitely have that in common and couldn’t be happier to see that weather behind us at least for now. Also, have a wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend, as well!! :)

  4. Good for you! You all will have a blast. I’m always suggesting things my younger cousin, who lives in Brooklyn, can do with her son. *Yes, I make suggestions of things for her to do in NYC from SC! LOL* There is so much at your fingertips, it makes no since not to enjoy the city.
I plan to enjoy the weekends here with RJ as well. We’re in a prime location with our city, Asheville, Atlanta, Columbia, Charleston and Charlotte all with in 1-3 hours.
We’re also making a family trip to NY in Aug. Our plan is to break away from visiting family and take several of those days, stay in the city and have a real vacation. Though, we’ve been to NY numerous times with him, we’ve never taken RJ into Manhattan. I’ve got a running list of things for us to do and see!

    • LOL send some of those suggestions my way!! YES totally stay in the city!! I have a post coming up about this but you should totally go to the Residence Inn on 54th and central park—girl I got a tour and it was phenomenal. I’ve been to a bunch of hotels in the city and they are all insanely small but this one has TONS of amenities!

  5. I am totally on board with make the most out of summer! I have plans already for how I want to make it the best summer yet!

Actually, the whole weekend thing was why I never actively went and sought out teaching positions after becoming certified to teach. I knew that I wouldn’t always have time during the week and I wanted to be free on weekends to do what I want since finding a sub is a pain. I think it is great you are taking the summer off!

  7. Yes!!! That’s great! I’m determined to take advantage of this summer too! I feel like since Pookah is going to kindergarten in the fall, I really need to take advantage this summer! We are ALL going to San Fran this year and I’m going to try to get in a few beach weekends too! It’s all about creating memories!

    • Something about that kindergarten right? Its like its a weird sort of pressure to have a last hurrah!! haha I hope I get to meet him while we are on the west coast!

  8. Zumba will be there but you can’t get time with your kids back! I’m sure you are going to have a blast!

  9. Wow, you’re going to be one busy Mama this summer! Though I completely understand your concerns. I often feel like we spend way too much time in the house every weekend just doing laundry, picking up, doing bills…all of those mundane things. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend enjoying your cute boys!

    • YES the weekend can totally fly by with us in the house and we don’t even realize it. Hope you had a fabulous Mother’s day!

  10. I applaud you. Zumba can wait for the winter, when you’ll probably welcome that chance to connect with amazing people and shake it. And NYC! And..kindergarten!
This is the summer to do all the amazing things you can do.
    I’m with you.

  11. I think this is a wonderful thing to do! You give to so many people so giving to your kids for the summer is perfect. Your gals will be back in September. Around here Zumba drops off in the summer anyway because everyone is doing what your doing with your boys. Have a terrific summer!
