I am an only child and the Lord knows I would be lonely so He gave me a huge abundance of girl (and boy) cousins that I simply adore.
One of those cousins in my older cousin Renae. When I was younger she was the cousin I wanted to be–she is 8 years older than me and as pretty as ever. She was my real life Barbie–I remember rushing to her wedding 3 hours away right after my high school graduation because there was no way I could miss her big day. As we grew older we remained close, and not in a talk everyday sort of way but when we see each other we pick right back up where we left off sort of way.
Fast forward to last night, I was working on a blog post and my phone dinged that she had tagged me in a post. When I opened it up I saw this.
What I wasn’t expecting was the flood of proud that took over me. I was so happy my eyes filled with tears because we had never once spoken about running. Truth is apart from posting my daily runs and races I don’t really talk to a lot of friends and family about my running journey. I talk to you guys because–I know you will listen. 🙂 Otherwise I am quite silent about it, I just go out and do it.
To see that I was even a small influence on getting her to train and complete a 5k is incredibly overwhelming. She has always been my role model of positivity–even when things got really hard for her–she never wavered. To see her with a bib and just glowing made me realize that this marathon journey is so much bigger than I am. Not only am I raising funds for the most amazing charity on the planet but I’ll be the first in my family to complete such a feat. #nopressure
You really never know who you are influencing. Whether the influence is good or bad, people are watching. I officially registered for the 2015 TCS NYC Marathon last week and I’ve been in a state of panic since I pressed the submit button. Her message yesterday settled my nerves because I now realize this is about more than me.
I’m trying to convince her to do a 10k with me next year for Princess Weekend. Since she lives in the Orlando area it would be perfect!
