Understanding Twitter Analytics

understanding twitter analyticsAre you a fan of twitter?

Twitter is my BFF. I mean, where else can you share your random thoughts with the world and get lost in random hashtags? Oh that’s right. Facebook. At least with twitter you only have 140 characters to say what you need to say, so you better be creative! I was on twitter before I had a blog, I stuck with twitter when I dumped facebook for a year. Now that I am looking to grow my brand awareness, I tend to put a lot of focus on twitter because this is where my largest network of followers lie.

Did you know twitter had analytics? I’ve been using Twitter analytics for a very long time. Last summer, I converted my twitter account to a business account and unlocked all of the juicy stats. Today I am going to give you a quick overview on why you should be using twitter analytics for your blog/business.

Where on earth is Twitter Analytics?!

After you have converted to a business account (you can do that by going to https://business.twitter.com/) you must go to https://analytics.twitter.com/. There you will find SO much great insight into your twitter world. You can find out what tweets are most popular, who is retweeting you, how many impressions you are getting, how many people are clicking into your links…and more. I am a BIG stats girl, so I love this stuff. Out of all of the social media networks, Twitter has the easiest  and most user friendly dashboards, I am going to share a few of mine so you can see exactly what I mean.

Tweet Activity

twitter tweets analyticsTwitter analytics can tell you how many followers you had vs. how many unfollows you had. It can also tell you how many times someone has clicked your link. Above you can see that my Vidergize post got 7 clicks, which is great. I know now that kind of language and content will get clicks. It will also give me stats on  favorites, retweets and replies.

Twitter analytics can also get into your follower data. This is my favorite part of ALL of the twitter analytics. As you can see above there was a sharp but gradual increase in my twitter followers when I focused on growing this social media network exclusively last year. Once I hit my goal, my followers leveled off.

The interest part was what made me MOST excited. I hitting the exact demographic that I want to hit, mostly moms with babies and toddlers. I also have a surprisingly large following in California–which is important for me to know when it comes to scheduling tweets, something I had never stopped to consider before.

Not shocked that my audience is mainly women but I am shocked that my Male percentage of followers is so high! Good to know.

Twitter Cards (New!)

For those of you who love graphs, the twitter card tab is for you! Here you can see how far your tweets are going and how many pairs of eyes are seeing what you write. You can see clicks into your links from your tweets and also from the tweets that wasn’t yours but included your links.

My URL clicks are also up which means that perhaps I should be tweeting more. I also noticed that my “Tweet Old Post” tweets are getting a lot of love as well, which  is great to know.

Do you look at your twitter analytics? Which of the stats are your favorite?

  26. This is great information Nellie! I’m stopping in from Let’s Get Real today. I love my Twitter, but I feel like I mostly use it to be social. Imagine that…………social on social media. I do like stats though so you know you caught my attention with this one. I didn’t realize that business accounts existed for Twitter. Are you aware of any differences between the two tyes of accounts? How do you use the stats to your advantage? So many questions…………….You know it’s a good post when folks have questions.

    • Thanks so much for stopping by! :) I haven’t noticed much of a difference with my tweeting, everything is the same except I now receive business emails. I check the stats to see what type of content my audience likes and don’t like–also I like to play around with the wording to see how many clicks I get. That kind of stuff :)

  27. I had no idea there was an option for twitter business account specifically. But now that I read this, it seems like a no-brainer! Should I convert mine? Does it make a difference besides being able to view your analytics?
