I Survived Bootcamp

I survived bootcamp

Ah, bootcamp.

I always avoid bootcamp like the flu plague. I see people running like crazy, climbing up stairs like mad people and doing unheard of body weight exercises and most times I cringe from my very safe, very stable elliptical machine.

My comfort zone is a beautiful place to reside.

However, I wanted to shake things up this year, as well as begin my fitness breakthrough and I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than take the class I feared most:

Bootcamp

I was feeling some kind of way scared about going to bootcamp then I read this post by Josie and felt like I could do anything. Me vs. bootcamp I would surely win right?

Hmm.

I had taken this instructor before, she doesn’t yell and she doesn’t push you when you look like you are about to collapse. Don’t be fooled however because somehow she still quietly wipes the floor with me (literally–you will see what I mean).

First we warmed up with squats, easy enough right? Then she hand us do several lunge exercises (bicep curl w lunge, arm raise w lunge, shoulder press w lunge etc) all holding free weights.

See, this I can manage? Except in between each round there we had to run up a flight of stairs and come back down continuing into the next exercise.

Say what now?

These are my actual fitbit numbers.

48 floors?!?!? How was I even standing at the end?

The second crazy part of bootcamp was when she had us laying flat on an open towel, belly down, and we had to drag ourselves–using arms only–across the room. My poor triceps cussed me out something BAD after that one!

After a series of even more torturous moves she had us do one last thing which I had never done before, like, ever.

She made us get into an almost plank position then climb our legs all the way up so now you are doing a handstand on the wall.

Now, lets pause for a second.

When I saw there people hoist themselves into position with barely a blink, I knew I had a decision to make: either I walk out or I try.

I pushed two legs up and fell, not hard, but enough to ask myself what the hell am I doing?!

She told me to get closer to the wall and lift and before you knew it I was up, I was doing an assisted handstand! Boom!

Bootcamp sucks but I am going to stick with it and see what kind of results I get!

Ever tried bootcamp? Or any other class you were terrified of?

  1. I did bootcamp when I was in a program for my ROTC many years ago. I thought it was fun but I was much more active and younger back then. If I go to bootcamp today I will clearly pass out. Keep up the great work I don’t know if I can do bootcamp right off the bat but I hope to get back to that status one day.

    • oh my gosh, ROTC im sure is a million times harder than this was. You can. trust me, I didn’t want to but, I bit the bullet and did it anyway

  2. Wow! That sounds serious but you did it and that was the main goal. Congrats on making it through BootCamp. I remember my BootCamp days. I wish I was still going. I dreaded class but at the end I was so happy and proud of myself. I was mostly surprised about what I was capable of doing. You will see the results. Stick with it. You can do it!
