31DayReset: Day 4, 5 & 6 — Personal Mission Statement



Day Four:

For those new to this blog I have been doing a 21 days Blog/Self Love Challenge called the 31DayReset over @ HappyBlackWoman.com

Instructions for Day 4:

Today’s exercise will force you to address that disconnect by doing the first task in developing a personal mission statement over the next three days: identifying your values. What matters most to you in life? The answer to this question is called your values. Often we find that we’ve forgotten about that which we care about because we allowed ourselves to get stuck doing something else, on someone else’s agenda.

Estimated Time to Complete: 30-60 minutes

Take at least 15 minutes to jot down a free-for-all list of all the things that means a lot to you in your life, all the things you care about.

Some of my most important values in no particular order:

  5. Economic Security
  6. Family
  7. Friendship
  8. Advancement
  9. Spirituality
  10. Love
  11. Consistent communication
  12. Adventure

Your Reset 10

Once you identify all of your values – all the things you care about, choose your “Reset 10″ – a list of your TOP 10 values from your list. They don’t have to be in any particular order, though you may certainly rank them if you’d like.

Here is my Reset10 in no particular order:

  1. Volunteerism
  2. Health
  3. Contentment
  4. Economic Security
  5. Family
  6. Friendship
  7. Spirituality
  8. Love
  9. Consistent communication
  10. Effective listener

Day 5
Part 1 instructions:
Now that you’re clear on what you really care about, you want to compare your values to how you’re currently living your life. For each value that you identified in your “Reset 10″, rate yourself from 1-10 on how you feel you’re acting out that particular value in your life. Be honest with yourself – it’s the only way to be able to improve upon the life you’re living now to the life you want to be living in the future!

Part 2 Instructions:
For each value that you identified in your “Reset 10,″ list out at least three actions that you currently take or that you should be taking in order to honor and fulfill that value in your life. What kinds of things would you be doing if you were living in full accordance with your values? What would it really look like for you to be able to rate yourself as a “10″ on how you live out all your values?
  • Volunteerism (8)
  1. Been volunteering at a food pantry in Harlem at least once monthly, since 2005
  2. Been volunteering as a service representative for my Church since 2007
  3. Would like to try new unique volunteering opportunities in 2012
  • Health (5)
  1. When physically @ 100% I workout 5-6x a week
  2. I would like to become a certified Spin instructor
  3. I don’t always eat enough healthy foods
  • Contentment (7)
  1. I am happy in my marriage
  2. I am happy with our “status” in life
  3. I would like to stay on top of household chores before they pile up
  • Economic Security (5)
  1. We have a decent savings
  2. Would like to have a much bigger saving
  3. Would love to have at least 8 months of funds in case one or both providers loses their job

  1. I have a great relationship with my family members
  2. I work very hard to be a good wife/mother
  3. Would like to reach out to family member that I don’t see very often.

  1. I need to reach out more to my friends, not only when I am having an event
  2. I have a lot of long term friends
  3. Need to expand my circle, but make sure I have the capacity to do it first

  1. Since it was difficult to sit in service with a 2yo, our church attendance has fallen off a bit
  2. Need to read my Bible more
  3. Need to stay more in prayer

  1. Constantly surrounded by love from home, family and friends
  2. I love my kids and hubby like crazy
  3. When I am in a jam, my friends and family show me so much love!

  1. I’m known for reaching out, having lunch, then falling off the face of the planet
  2. I need to stay in constant communication with Him.
  3. Need to be better helping friends and family through situations

  1. I want to be able to be a no judgmental listener for everyone in my life
  2. I want to sharpen my skills to hear things that the person may not be saying outright
  3. I want to be a better listener overall, paying attention to detail

Day 6

Values + Values in Action = Personal Mission Statement

Now that you’ve identified your values and what your values look like in action, you should now take at least 30 minutes to write your personal mission statement. Take as much time as you need to reflect and write out your mission statement. It can be short-term or long-term, and should encompass your values and how you’d like to express them in your life. You don’t have to use ALL the values in your Reset 10 if you don’t want to. It may serve you best to only include your top three or you could include all 20 of the ones you came up with during your brainstorm.

My Personal Mission Statement (work in progress!)

I value family, spirituality and love in my life. I want these values to represent my life, and be apparent to anyone that knows me. I want to start my own youth volunteering organization that exposes young people to a life of service, hopefully getting them involved in their communities and making a huge change in their neighborhoods. I strive to be an effective listener, and have constant communication with family members, friends and God. I strive to be healthier, to continue my exercise regimen and eat healthier foods that serve my body well. I will find time for all of the necessary things and not let the non important things become a distraction. I will strive my best to stay focused on these important values this year and beyond.
